Back from Japan.

Wed Oct 14, 2009, 12:05 PM
So Japan was a blast, I got my hands on a metric ton of goodies:

- "Monster Hunter Illustrations" book.

- The first three collected volumes of "Z Mazinger".

- Dragon Quest IX Game Guides (both of them).

- Two "Weekly Famitsu" with excellent art.

- Pixiv's 2009 book.

- A book called "Sai, the first step", which details how to get started with Paint Tool Sai.

On the toy front I was a little more restrained, but I still managed to find the Chogokin Getters (The set with all 3 of them) super cheap, and a few other things. Now I only need to buy Grendizer and Jeeg to have all of Go Nagai's seminal Super Robots. I can still hope for another trip to Japan, I guess :D

So far the books are keeping me very entertained as I try to understand how to use Sai, and how do the artists at Pixiv obtain such godly results with it. The fact that I can't read a word in Japanese will ensure I'm busy for a while.

I've also been playing with "Art School: First Semester" for DSiWare. It is an amazing painting tool, with certain advantages when compared to Colors! While some people don't see a benefit to buying the "Second Semester" because it has fewer lessons and the same tools, it also gives you another save slot for an additional project. So I went ahead and got it.

I'll be posting the stuff I paint with it here.

I'm part of the 10% of internet dwellers that would never put something stupid like this in their signature unless it was to make fun of the other 90% that does it. If you're part of that 10% copy and paste this on your signature so i can make fun of you.

:iconghostbastard:
so how is the comic industry in costa rika? is it dominated by us comic or manga?
:iconmrbigal:
Well, I'd like to think there's a balance. When I was young US comics were more prevalent; there was no manga available at all, but animé has been around forever. I actually watched the black and white '63 Astroboy, as we'd get all kinds of shows translated in Mexico or even Spain years after they originally aired in Japan.

I watched all the giant robot shows (Mazinger Z, Groizer X,Dorvack) plus the magical princesses (Candy, Chappy, etc) and all those shows about kids looking for their mom/dad/family (the italian kid, the french kid, the peruvian kid, etc).

Nowadays kids are very much into shonen manga, I even used to teach a manga drawing class at a local public high school. Among their favorites were Gundam Wing, Kenshin, Naruto, Bleach, etc). Interestingly enough, it is easier to find manga than US comics.

Hope I answered your question :)
